The three year old program at St. James’ Preschool continues the development of social skills while helping children learn how to work together and express themselves through verbal language. In the three year old class children focus on more developed language curriculum, where they follow letter-based themes and learn the alphabet in order. The children will learn the beginning sound for each letter and will be introduced to words that begin with the letter of the week. In addition to learning letters and sounds, the children will learn numbers 1-10 and will be able to count objects using one-to-one correspondence.
Three year old children have many opportunities for artistic expression in the classroom. They have a full art center in their classroom with crayons, markers, scissors, play dough and more materials to creatively express themselves. The threes get to practice prewriting skills at the writing center like holding a crayon or marker and learning to write their name.
Social skills are greatly emphasized in the threes, where children will learn to “use their words” when feeling strong emotions and will learn to play with others in cooperative games. It’s amazing how little the threes are when entering the school year, and how big they become by the end!
